The holidays are a wonderful time to begin writing your family history. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "What? Is she crazy? I'm so busy, I couldn't possibly add one more thing to my "to-do" list." But guess what? This holiday holiday season will pass. The leftover pumpkin pie will be tossed out. That beautiful table you set with fine china, will go back to your everyday dishes, and the wrapping paper and ribbon you so tenderly wrapped around the presents will lie in a crumpled mass. Christmas will end. It always does. And what if...what if one of those people who sat around your table doesn't get to see another Christmas. What if this is your last opportunity to hear their stories? What would you do differently if you could know this in advance?
Don't get me wrong...I'm not being morbid. I'm not suggesting we live our lives in fear of losing someone. But reality is, that many of us live life with the opposite view. We put off writing down the family stories. We figure we'll do it later. And many, many of us will allow time to run out.
You can start today. You can start this year. It's as simple as asking a simple question. You'd be surprised at what stories will flow from the simplest of queries. Below are a few to get you started. While you're at it, answer them for yourself! Post your answers here or tell someone your story today.
1. What was your favorite ornament?
2. What song means Christmas to you?
3. What treat is a must during the holiday season?
4. What is your most vivid holiday memory?
5. Where did you get your tree? Did that tradition ever change?
I'd love to know what memories these question evoke for you. Happy Holidays. And please...Write down those holiday memories now - because it's later than you think!
Write Now - Because it's Later Than you Think.
